Sometimes a client comes along who is so likable and their story so compelling, we can’t wait to get to work. Realm is a much loved restaurant in Parksville BC, serving incredible, locally sourced food to the community. But that’s only part of the story. Owner and chef James had much more to say. His vision for wholesome, hearty food struck a chord when we first worked with Realm during their inception in 2014, and the passion had only deepened. It was more than dishing up nourishing food, James wanted to shine a light on local growers, support healthy eating and create a community vibe that was uniquely Realm.
THE CHALLENGE
James already had an existing logo and website, but it didn’t tell the full story. A change in the ownership structure meant that James was going solo. We updated the brand, website and messaging to reflect this change but also speak to his passion for food, surf culture, meaningful partnerships and the beautiful island he calls home.

Conversations with James offered no shortage of inspiration. They led us towards colour inspired by the sky, sea and sand. We used a lettuce woodcut to create texture and context, continuing with a series of marks that referenced the wildly beautiful produce Realm serves. Vibrant new photography and clean typography combined with their bold new colour palette brought Realm to life.

We built a playful website that spoke to the viewer in a warm and lighthearted way. Enabling people to access their menu, but also to dig a little deeper and discover James’ story and his commitment to locally sourced food. We created a take-out ordering system to help Realm and her customers navigate the Covid experience as smoothly as possible.
